MOIRA “MIMI” DEAN for Oro Loma Sanitary District – Ashland, Cherryland, Hayward Acres, San Lorenzo, Fairview, San Leandro, Five Canyons, small portions of Hayward & Castro Valley

– SERVING OUR COMMUNITIES –

Living green with Mimi Dean.

Being a teacher for 32 years helped Mimi hone essential skills in leadership and governance such as  policy making, budget management, and meeting ethically and socially responsible goals.  Mimi currently serves on the Eden Municipal Advisory Council and knows how important it is to listen and gather community input whenever a major decision is made.

Mimi is a proven leader with the education, experience, and enthusiasm needed to serve on the Oro Loma Sanitary District board. Her degree is in environmental studies with a focus on statewide water resources and San Francisco Bay biology. She worked for the SF Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board enforcing clean water regulations. Her education and experience pales in comparison to her enthusiasm for living green and inspiring others.

Horizontal Levee

Priorities when elected

Zero Waste Education

Our first step in zero waste education is doing a waste audit at schools and businesses. Then we need to work as a team and revamp our education, composting, and recycling programs. We need to develop green ribbon schools and green ribbon businesses. These programs reduce environmental impacts, improve health and wellness, and provide effective environmental education. Mimi has so much expertise in this area to share with our community members. She is passionate about the four R’s-reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot- as well as our need to rethink our choices.

Fiscal Responsibility

The recent infrastructure rate increases have already been voted in. The problem is that former boards were set on keeping the rates the lowest in Alameda County. This means they did not do maintenance and upgrades when they needed to get done. Now we have sewer pipes and other infrastructure that’s almost 100 years old. These things must be fixed and there is no getting around it. We must explore all funding options as we work to fix our aging infrastructure and implement new projects and plans.

Building Partnerships

Working together and building partnerships is crucial.  We must work across jurisdictions, with local agencies, and with community members. We must be good listeners and gather input before we can make decisions. We need to gather data, work with experts, and formulate plans and policies that best serve our region.

Mitigating Effects of Climate Change

We must continue to cut back on carbon emissions through improved infrastructure, produce as much energy as we can, move/protect infrastructure as needed, and continue to enhance wetlands and our horizontal levee.

Only pee, poop, and paper (toilet) go down the toilet drain!

Mimi is committed to carrying out Oro Loma’s mission and she would like to use her critical thinking skills and creativity to support the mission.

– TESTIMONIALS –

Mimi Dean’s contributions to our district as an advocate for her students, for the conservation of the environment, and for the continuous improvement of our community have made her an invaluable leader. As my former leadership and art teacher, Mimi Dean encouraged me to think outside the box, get curious about the world around me, and use my time and resources to make a positive impact on the environment. I remember the thrill of making a ballerina costume out of recycled materials for the trash fashion show she organized and the wonder of learning about native plants in the gardening days she led. Mimi Dean was an extraordinary teacher, and I know that if elected, she would excel in her new role serving the community of the Oro Loma Sanitary District.

Mz Mimi Dean was one of the most impactful teachers of my middle school career. She brought shy kids like myself out of their shell and into their green-loving creative versions of themselves, while also learning so much about how art can contribute to making our earth green. Turning junk into funk was the trademark of our middle school art, and Mz. Mimi Dean was sure to make her students feel loved while doing it.

I’ve known Mimi Dean since our school days at Bohannon, and she’s always been deeply committed to our community. Her passion for sustainability and practical solutions will make her a great advocate for recycling and composting on the Oro Loma Sanitary District Board.

Mimi Dean is an incredible activist and educator who not only leads but engages with her community. She has changed many lives being the impactful and welcoming person she is. When I think of a better future I think of her and what she does to encourage people around her to think inclusively.

Mimi Dean was my art and leadership middle school teacher. She taught me the importance of feeding yourself well, taking care of the environment, and surrounding yourself with healthy sustainable relationships. She has the spirit and experience ideal for making community-based decisions on our local sanitary board.

~ Samuel Medina

I am lucky to have had the pleasure of being in Mimi Dean’s classroom for three years. She is a vibrant and very creative educator who has inspired many students, such as me, at Bohannon Middle School. She has used her creativity in art to inspire students to care for the environment by having her students create artistic posters for the Oro Loma poster contest every year.
